Vellum Lore investigates the hidden histories of familiar things — fairy tales, nursery rhymes, holidays, toys, mascots, and everyday sayings — and separates what the historical record actually supports from the “dark origin” myths that circulate around them.

The internet is full of confident claims that a beloved rhyme is secretly about the plague, or that a common phrase comes from some grisly medieval law. Some of these stories are true. Many are folklore invented long after the fact. Our whole purpose is to tell the difference, using primary sources and reputable scholarship, and to show our working so you can judge for yourself.

Every article traces a story back to its earliest documented sources, states plainly whether the popular claim is real, a myth, or somewhere in between, and lists those sources at the end. When the honest answer is “no one knows,” we say so rather than inventing a tidy origin.

This is a pen name for the site’s editorial voice, not a claim to personal academic credentials — our authority rests entirely on the sources we cite, not on titles. We would rather earn your trust with a verifiable reference than a resume.
