A popular nugget of trivia claims the LEGO company cleverly named itself after the Latin word lego, meaning “I put together” or “I assemble” — perfect for a construction toy. It is a lovely story, and the Latin coincidence is real. But it is not where the name came from.

Danish, not Latin

The name is Danish. LEGO was founded by Ole Kirk Christiansen, a carpenter in Billund, Denmark, whose company originally made wooden toys before moving to plastic bricks. He formed the name by joining two Danish words: leg godt, meaning “play well.” The brand was, from the start, a compressed motto about play — a fitting philosophy for a toymaker — rather than a Latin pun about assembly.

The coincidence

The Latin connection is genuine but accidental. It is true that lego can mean “I gather” or “I assemble” in Latin (and “I read” in another sense), and it is a charming fit for a building toy. The company itself has acknowledged the coincidence with some amusement. But the founder was not reaching for Latin; he was abbreviating a Danish phrase about playing well. The Latin meaning was discovered after the fact, a happy accident that the “clever origin” version then promoted to the main event.

This is a small but instructive case: a true fact (the Latin meaning) gets welded to a false claim (that it was the reason for the name).
