The Christmas tree comes wrapped in two confident origin stories: that it is a survival of ancient pagan tree-worship, and that Martin Luther was the first to hang lights on one. Both are more legend than history. The real story is more modest and more German.
An early-modern German custom
Bringing evergreens indoors in winter is genuinely old — greenery that stays alive in the dead season has obvious appeal — but the specific tradition of the decorated Christmas tree took recognisable shape in early-modern Germany, roughly the sixteenth century. Guilds and households set up and decorated evergreen trees at Christmas, and from those German-speaking lands the custom gradually spread. This is the documented core: not a druidic rite, but a regional Christian-era practice that grew and travelled.
The Luther legend
The charming tale that Martin Luther, walking home under a starry sky, was so moved that he set candles on a fir tree to recreate the effect for his family is exactly that — a charming tale. It is a pious legend attached to Luther later, not a documented event. Candles on trees did become part of the tradition, but crediting the innovation to a single famous reformer is storytelling, not evidence.
How it conquered the English-speaking world
The tree’s spread into Britain and America owed much to German influence and royal fashion. When an illustration of Queen Victoria and her German husband, Prince Albert, gathered around a decorated tree circulated in the mid-nineteenth century, the custom became fashionable and swiftly popular. As with the white wedding dress, a royal example turned a regional practice into a broad “tradition” in a single generation.
